In the work on the Second Industrial Revolution and Imperialism, we asked students to explain these processes through a fairy tale. Aguas Santas
Magro has sent us this:
The child did not want to be different from the other
was once a young English boy named John, the son of a soldier who was posted to India in 1876 , the year that Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of this country. John is the first child of Andrew and Eli Zabeth is a very clever boy with great interest in learning who likes to play with other children, which can not do with her two brothers because they are much smaller than him. Since his arrival in this new country every morning he took classes with a teacher who teaches English and other subjects in English history and how they have come to live in this distant land. Although John is very interested in learning, sometimes get distracted looking out the bedroom window where he studied how an Indian boy of about seven carries water containers to take them to his mother, who works in the service of home and want to play with him. After completing his class, John leaves his room with the intention to seek the Indian boy she saw in the morning, which is in the kitchen starting vegetables and asks why he is doing those duties and not as he takes classes, to which he responds that it is their job and that each day should help with the housework for him and his family can be comfortable and well cared for.
next day when John began his daily class teacher asked her about India and why some children were working and he does not, to which she replied that both England and in other places were children working. She said this: "Look John, I would like you realized that you are a lucky child, because your life is very comfortable compared to other children. Life is very hard both at home and in other for many people. In our country there is a very important sector of society, in which many men, women and children work long hours in factories to feed, work that is underpaid and they do not come to live with dignity. This is partly the reason that today we are living in this country, plus some other ... last few years have created in our country many factories that produce products in large quantities products to be sold and for which they must find materials for their production. In our country can not sell these products, so there are people looking for new places where they can sell all these goods and also search for materials in order to continue producing new products. When people in our country came to this continent (Asia) and others in the world such as Africa, observed that the natives of these new places were people with less knowledge, with different beliefs from ours, which could break due our military superiority. This has resulted in both this country and others that have moved into other countries with higher level of civilization, have developed in some forms of life aspects such as the construction of transportation, such as rail. But all these improvements have contributed to these places that have moved into foreign non-natives are happy because their lifestyles have been changed due to the influx of people with different customs, which impose its rules. Well John, I do not know if you've understood what I tried to explain, but if not already you will understand when you're a little older. "
John was pensive before his teacher's explanation and the truth is that in part he did understand what she had told him. But what was not at all clear is why there were people who had to work for others, he did not feel different at all in regard to Indian child who thought the play every time I had occasion. And it really was. Every day, John was waiting impatiently the moment when Muley (Indian child) ends its work to play with him.
